Senior guards Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) each scored 14 points, and the UMBC women’s basketball team (2-2) gave No. 9 Maryland (4-0) all it could handle before falling, 70-59, in front of a boisterous crowd of 2,305 at the RAC Arena Saturday evening.

UMBC All-Access will show a behind the scenes look of the UMBC Women's Basketball team as they compete for an America East title during the 2011-2012 season. In Episode 1, UMBC, coming off a season-opening 72-50 win over Morgan State just two days earlier, takes its first road trip of the season as they take on a Monmouth team that won 23 games last season and was invited to the WNIT.

Midday Madness

Thursday was our fifth annual Midday Madness. More than 1,300 elementary and middle school students came out to the RAC against No.24 Vermont, the defending America East champion. Before the game they got tours of the campus from student-athletes and were lucky enough to get a motivational talk from myself. Click "Midday Madness" above to watch.

Holiday in New York

We spent the last couple of days of 2009 in New York City for the Fordham Holiday Classic. While up there my family and friends dropped by to see us defeat East Carolina and Fordham. It was a fun trip, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Goodmorning everyone!

This is Jaclyn Goldbarg, one of the Assistant Coaches here at UMBC! I’m excited to be the first guest blogger on Coach Stern’s blog. Though my name can’t be turned into anything very witty like “PHILosophy,” I’d like to take a minute to say hello and share a few thoughts with you all.

First, let me thank Coach Stern for the “extension” he granted me on this assignment… I’m no more than months out of college, and procrastination on homework assignments seems to have picked up right where it left off! Coach asked me to write a blog last week, but my creative motivation was apparently lacking.

And then… yesterday (Monday) morning, driving to work I noticed almost all of the trees have started to turn orange and red and yellow… I got out of my car and it was actually cold outside! Like the real kind of cold, the kind that when you feel it you know exactly what time of year it is…Next, when I walked into the RAC I could smell fresh lacquer and saw the floor nicely refinished and perfectly shiny!...Last night the team did their end of preseason conditioning test and everyone did great, with a lot of big improvements!... So what time of year is it exactly?... All signs point to BASKETBALL SEASON!!!

Now, with only a few days until the first official practice of the year, the team, the staff, and everyone here at UMBC couldn’t more excited! Personally, the first few months of working here have been exciting everyday when I realize I’m actually a college basketball coach!! The transition from playing to coaching has been relatively easy. Everyone in the athletic department here has been welcoming and helpful! The other Women’s basketball Assistants (Coach Godsey and Coach Roche) are awesome on the court and off! Okay fine, Coach Stern is pretty cool too… haha! The players have been great so far! Although I’m only a few years at the most older than them, the girls are all incredibly respectful and great to work with! They’ve worked very hard on the court and in the weight room this preseason and I’m really looking forward to seeing them progress as a team this season!

I just thought everyone might enjoy an inside look at this year's Retriever Golf Classic, which took place in June at the Rolling Road Country Club...I know my swing looks a lot like Tigers!

Ah, the First Day of Classes...

Compliance meetings, physicals, team meetings...oh, and classes.

We have 10 returning players, one transfer and only one freshman on our team this year, so everything is going pretty smoothly. You would be surprised how hectic the first week can be when you have a large number of new players like we did last year (8).

Our young ladies do a great job of taking care of our freshmen, so I'm not worried about Kim Browning fitting in at all. Kim is our first freshman not to live with other basketball players. She is living with three soccer players...I guess that's good.

Our players will play pickup today. Coaches can't watch, but I don't want to watch anyway. Pickup is where all of the bad habits are developed - post players act like point guards, the ball never goes inside, no one sprints back on defense, etc.. But they will have fun and draw a crowd of guys who will ooh and ahh at every long 3 or behind-the-back pass.

We will start individual workouts, conditioning and weight training this week, but I'm really excited about one of our new community service projects. Every Friday we will serve dinner to homeless women and their children at My Sister's Place women's center in Baltimore. It will give our young ladies a chance to interact with women who are down on their luck and hopefully put a smile on their faces.

Hello UMBC women's basketball fans! I hope everyone has had a great summer! I'm eagerly awaiting the return of our players and can't wait to embark on another season.

Throughout the year I will give you an inside perspective on the inner workings of a college basketball program. You will hear from me, my assistants, my players and maybe even some special guests.

Thank you to the UMBC Blog team of assistant coach Jaclyn Goldbarg and SID Jess Bernheim for their assistance in maintaining and facilitating this unique site.
